    Integration of reliable algorithms into modeling software

    In this note we discuss strategies that would enhance modern modeling and simulation software (MSS) with reliable routines using validated data types, controlled rounding, algorithmic differentiation and interval equation or initial value problem solver. Several target systems are highlighted. In stochastic traffic modeling, the computation of workload distributions plays a prominent role since they influence the quality of service parameters. INoWaTIV is a workload analysis tool that uses two different techniques: the polynomial factorization approach and the Wiener-Hopf factorization to determine the work-load distributions of GI/GI/1 and SMP/GI/1 service systems accurately. Two extensions of a multibody modeling and simulation software were developed to model kinematic and dynamic properties of multibody systems in a validated way. Furthermore, an interface was created that allows the computation of convex hulls and reliable lower bounds for the distances between subpav-ing-encoded objects constructed with SIVIA (Set Inverter Via Interval Analysis)

    Comparison of distance measures for historical spelling variants

    This paper describes the comparison of selected distance measures in their applicability for supporting retrieval of historical spelling variants (hsv). The interdisciplinary project Rule-based search in text databases with nonstandard orthography develops a fuzzy fulltext search engine for historical text documents. This engine should provide easier text access for experts as well as interested amateurs. The FlexMetric framework enhances the distance measure algorithm found to be most efficient according to the results of the evaluation.     Reliable visual analytics, a prerequisite for outcome assessment of engineering systems

    Various evaluation approaches exist for multi-purpose visual analytics (VA) frameworks. They are based on empirical studies in information visualization or on community activities, for example, VA Science and Technology Challenge (2006-2014) created as a community evaluation resource to “decide upon the right metrics to use, and the appropriate implementation of those metrics including datasets and evaluators” 1 . In this paper, we propose to use evaluated VA environments for computer-based processes or systems with the main goal of aligning user plans, system models and software results. For this purpose, trust in VA outcome should be established, which can be done by following the (meta-)design principles of a human-centered verification and validation assessment and also in dependence on users’ task models and interaction styles, since the possibility to work with the visualization interactively is an integral part of VA. To define reliable VA, we point out various dimensions of reliability along with their quality criteria, requirements, attributes and metrics.     The exact equivalence of the one-flavour lattice Thirring model with Wilson fermions to a two-colour loop model

    Within Euclidean lattice field theory an exact equivalence between the one-flavour 2D Thirring model with Wilson fermions and Wilson parameter r=1r = 1 to a two-colour loop model on the square lattice is established. For non-interacting fermions this model reduces to an exactly solved loop model which is known to be a free fermion model. The two-colour loop model equivalent to the Thirring model can also be understood as a 4-state 49-vertex model.Comment: 29 pages LaTe

    We present a unified account of magnetic exchange and Raman scattering in the quasi-one-dimensional transition-metal oxide NaV2_2O5_5. Based on a cluster-model approach explicit expressions for the exchange integral and the Raman-operator are given. It is demonstrated that a combination of the electronic-structure and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowed by symmetry in this material, are responsible for the finite Raman cross-section giving rise to both, one- and two-magnon scattering amplitudes.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Single-hole dynamics in dimerized and frustrated spin-chains

    We present a unified account for the coupled single-hole- and spin-dynamics in the spin-gap phase of dimerized and frustrated spin-chains and two-leg spin ladders. Based on the strong dimer-limit of a one-dimensional t123t_123-J123J_123-model a diagrammatic approach is presented which employs a mapping of the spin-Hamiltonian onto a pseudo-fermion bond-boson model. Results for the single-hole spectrum are detailed. A finite quasi-particle weight is observed and studied for a variety of system parameters. A comparison with existing exact diagonalization data is performed and good agreement is found.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    Micromechanical function of myofibrils isolated from skeletal and cardiac muscles of the zebrafish

    The zebrafish is a potentially important and cost-effective model for studies of development, motility, regeneration, and inherited human diseases. The object of our work was to show whether myofibrils isolated from zebrafish striated muscle represent a valid subcellular contractile model. These organelles, which determine contractile function in muscle, were used in a fast kinetic mechanical technique based on an atomic force probe and video microscopy. Mechanical variables measured included rate constants of force development (kACT) after Ca2+ activation and of force decay (τREL−1) during relaxation upon Ca2+ removal, isometric force at maximal (Fmax) or partial Ca2+ activations, and force response to an external stretch applied to the relaxed myofibril (Fpass). Myotomal myofibrils from larvae developed greater active and passive forces, and contracted and relaxed faster than skeletal myofibrils from adult zebrafish, indicating developmental changes in the contractile organelles of the myotomal muscles. Compared with murine cardiac myofibrils, measurements of adult zebrafish ventricular myofibrils show that kACT, Fmax, Ca2+ sensitivity of the force, and Fpass were comparable and τREL−1 was smaller. These results suggest that cardiac myofibrils from zebrafish, like those from mice, are suitable contractile models to study cardiac function at the sarcomeric level. The results prove the practicability and usefulness of mechanical and kinetic investigations on myofibrils isolated from larval and adult zebrafish muscles. This novel approach for investigating myotomal and myocardial function in zebrafish at the subcellular level, combined with the powerful genetic manipulations that are possible in the zebrafish, will allow the investigation of the functional primary consequences of human disease–related mutations in sarcomeric proteins in the zebrafish model
